29/11/21 - FROM MILANO EXHIBITION TO MONTANA BERNIE'S SCHOOL, WHAT'S TRIALS FUTURE?

The Milan show has just ended - EICMA International Two-Wheeler Exhibition - an edition that fans of the Trial will remember as the poorest in attendance in the sector. Only the giant Honda Montesa and the “small” Electric Motion participated regularly exhibiting their models, challenging - albeit with different reasons - the general crisis of our niche sport.

It is a real shame not to have been able to admire our favorite mounts in a context full of motorcyclists such as the traditional Fiera di Milano. Not so much for those who, like us, are very much involved in Trials daily and the have already known the 2022 models through social media or industry media, but precisely for the opportunities to attract the attention and curiosity of other people, perhaps favorably surprised by some captivating video accompanying the exhibition of the models.

As we have always sustained, the Trial must go out of the Trial, make itself known to people who still ignore it, but beware, not only the beautiful and impossible Trial practiced by the strong top riders of the X-Trial series or the one recently presented in Italian television show TuSiCheVales with the maneuvers of Samuele Zuccali. All fantastic with people stand open-mouthed with surprise and admiration but to whom it would be appropriate to let know that Trials is not just that.

Currently the specialty is experiencing magical moments in the vintage world, with dizzying numbers in the competitions dedicated to them, but it is struggling to survive in the modern world with ever smaller numbers of riders in the top categories.

It is a Catch-22 situation: the riders do not find sponsors to continue, even less support from the industries, while the industries do not sell enough motorcycles and the sponsors do not have sufficient visibility and therefore do not pay out money.

In short, the key to the problem is always the need to replenish the base, involve young people and not only, because in the absence of new generations distracted by a thousand possibilities to achieve satisfaction more easily, we must also focus on the less young, since only the Trial, among motorcycle sports, can boast such a large age range in which it can be practiced.

It goes without saying that Trial schools continue to be the most suitable solutions for recruiting precious new blood. Who does not give up and fails to understand that the sport he has always loved and practiced to the point of boasting a world title in 1979 as well as other prestigious trophies is the American Bernie Schreiber, who has lived in Zurich for years and is active promulgator of a traveling school, the Zero BS Experience.

Bernie have you been to the Milan show? What do you think?

“It is disappointing to see so many consumers and so little Trials bikes. Obviously, industries cannot understand its value, they only see the costs.”

How did your international schools and events go over these past few years?

“I have to admit I expected better: it didn't work out as I planned. Often the places chosen were far to decentralized and therefore reached only by enthusiasts. The real added value is to involve a lot more off-road enthusiasts to events, apart from just the participants in the schools”

What are you planning next?

“I was invited to conduct a two day trials school during an event of five consecutive days that includes the annual Whiskey Gulch Two-Day Trials in Butte, Montana, June 15-19, 2022, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of my double US National Championship victories there in 1982.”

After the 2 days of school , what's up on the third day?

"That third day will be a celebration of all my victories in 1982 which included the SSDT, American Championship and more. We will have other champions like Scott Head attending and will do an exhibition ride, talk and raffle to win prizes. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

And finally a two-day competition?

“Yes, the Whiskey Gulch Two-Day Trials, an event that brought in over 100 riders from eight different states in 2020 as part of the Conquer The West Trials Series which began in 2017. This is a two day event series in the western USA where riders take part in at least four events to earn points towards their respective final positions and has expanded to include ten-two day events in 2022.”

Montana is tied with prestigious memories of your glorious past, right?

“Montana is of particular interest to me ever since winning those two US Nationals on my way to securing the 1982 US National Championship title as the two events were a stark contrast of back to back days. The first National held in Bozeman on July 3 was very easy as my 7 mark winning score proved, yet the second one in Whitefish was anything but as I lost 144 marks, that still stands the highest winning score in the history of The US National Championship series.”

Are some of those organizers still on duty in this event?

“Yes it was Montana native Rich Hilbun who organized that second record setting national in Whitefish and recently had the idea to contact me about returning on the anniversary to conduct a trials school. The five day format was the result of their following discussions along with Dan Larson of Mossy Rock Trials & Off-Road who organizes and sponsors The Whiskey Gulch Two- Day Trials which began in 2009 and has taken place annually without interruption since.”

What was your reaction when you were contacted?

“Absolutely positive, I’m very proud to be Guest of Honor at the Whiskey Gulch Two Day Trials in the beautiful state of Montana. The gold and silver treasure state of America is every trials rider’s dream destination to discover the outdoors and off-road riding. Rich Hilbun and Dan Larson at Mossy Rock Trials & Off-Road are excellent organizers and together we came up with a plan to make this happen. It is very exciting returning in 2022 to teach, ride and celebrate in such a memorable place. Who knows, I might take gold again, but will be very happy with silver as well!”

How much does it cost to participate, do you already have subscribers?

“For the two days of school the cost is USD$300 is required but I don't make one dollar. A lot of the class funds are invested back into the class experience which includes meals, gifts, training books and other items. My expenses will be paid by sponsors. It is amazing that the 30 available spaces have already been sold out in just a few days and now a waiting list.”

Matt Liberatore, who created the press release, added two comments from the organizers Rich Hilbun and Dan Larson.

Hilbun, who made first contact with Schreiber about his return said:

“That second 1982 national in Whitefish, we set the sections up to be difficult because the previous round in Bozeman was so easy. The weather didn’t cooperate and it poured down rain. I remember Bernie saying it was like a round of the world championship. That was a great compliment and with Bernie doing his trials schools all these years later we thought to have him come back on the 40th anniversary, and are honored to have the legend of US trials return. Bernie made such an impact on the sport then and still today. We are all excited to host him as the Guest of Honor for the 2022 Whiskey Gulch Two-Day Trials week!”

Larson, who has owned Mossy Rock Trials & Off Road since 2011 and is an authorized dealer for TRS and Beta motorcycles, began his shop repairing bikes for trials riders primarily providing a means for riders in the South Central Montana area to have support and also specializes in restoring used bikes said:

“As the organizer of the Whiskey Gulch Two Day Trials for the past 12 years and sponsor of the event with Mossy Rock Trials & Off Road since 2011, it is such a privilege to host America’s greatest of all time trials riders. DAL SALONE DI MILANO ALLA SCUOLA DI BERNIE IN MONTANA, QUALE SARA' IL FUTURO DEL TRIAL?

Si è appena concluso il salone di Milano - Esposizione Internazionale delle Due Ruote EICMA – un'edizione che gli appassionati del Trial ricorderanno come la più povera di presenze del settore. Solo il colosso Honda Montesa e la “piccola” Electric Motion hanno partecipato esponendo regolarmente i propri modelli, sfidando – seppur con ragioni differenti – la crisi generale del nostro sport di nicchia.

E' un vero peccato non aver potuto ammirare le cavalcature da noi preferite in un contesto ricco di motociclisti come la tradizionale Fiera di Milano. Non tanto per chi , come noi, mastica pane e Trial quotidianamente e i modelli 2022 li ha già conosciuti tramite i social o i media del settore, ma proprio per le opportunità perse di attirare le attenzioni e le curiosità di altre persone, magari favorevolmente stupite da qualche accattivante video a corredo dell'esposizione dei modelli.

Come abbiamo sempre sostenuto il Trial deve andare fuori del Trial, farsi conoscere alla gente che ancora lo ignora, ma attenzione non solo il Trial bello e impossibile dei funamboli delle gare di X-Trial o quello recentemente presentato nella trasmissione televisiva TuSiCheVales con le evoluzioni di Samuele Zuccali. Tutto fantastico con gente che osservava ammirata a bocca aperta ma alla quale sarebbe opportuno far sapere che il Trial non è solo quello.

Attualmente la specialità vive momenti magici nel mondo vintage, con numeri da capogiro – all'estero – nelle competizioni dedicate a loro, ma stenta a sopravvivere nel mondo moderno con numeri sempre più esigui di piloti nelle categorie top.

E' un gatto che si morde la coda: i piloti non trovano sponsor per continuare, tanto meno appoggi dalle industrie, mentre le industrie non vendono sufficienti moto e gli sponsor non hanno sufficiente visibilità e quindi non sborsano denaro.

Insomma il bandolo della matassa è sempre la necessità di rimpinguare la base, coinvolgere giovani e non solo, perchè in mancanza di nuove generazioni distratte da mille possibilità di raggiungere soddisfazioni più facilmente, si deve puntare anche sui meno giovani, visto che solo il Trial, tra gli sport motociclistici, può vantare una così larga fascia di età in cui si può praticare.

Inutile sottolineare quanto le scuole di Trial continuino a essere le soluzioni più adatte a reclutare preziosa linfa nuova. Chi non demorde e non riesce a capacitarsi che lo sport che ha sempre amato e praticato al punto di fregiarsi di un titolo mondiale nel 1979 oltre ad altri prestigiosi trofei è l'americano Bernie Schreiber da anni residente a Zurigo e attivo promulgatore di una scuola itinerante , la Zero BS Experience.

Bernie sei stato al salone di Milano? Cosa ne pensi?

"E' molto triste vedere tanta gente e così poco Trial. Evidentemente le industrie non riescono a capirne il valore, ci vedono solo i costi."

Com'è andata la tua scuola itinerante?

“Devo ammettere che mi aspettavo di meglio: non è andata come speravo. Spesso i luoghi scelti erano troppo decentrati e quindi raggiunti solo dai praticanti. Il vero valore aggiunto di quello che volevo creare sarebbe stato coinvolgere tante persone, non solo i partecipanti alla scuola”

Cosa hai in programma a breve?

"Sono stato invitato a condurre una scuola di due giorni durante un evento di cinque giorni consecutivi che include una gara di due giorni annuale chiamata Whisky Gulch a Butte, nel Montana, dal 15 al 19 giugno 2022, per celebrare il 40 ° anniversario della mia doppia vittoria nel campionato statunitense nel 1982”.

Dopo i 2 giorni di scuola, cosa ci sarà il terzo giorno?

E' in programma una celebrazione di tutte le mie vittorie nel 1982 che includevano la Scottish, il campionato americano e altro ancora. Avremo altri campioni come Scott Head che parteciperanno e faremo un giro espositivo e una lotteria per vincere dei premi. Sarà una giornata divertente."

E infine una gara di due giorni?

“Sì, il Whisky Gulch Two-Day Trials, un evento che ha portato oltre 100 piloti da otto stati diversi nel 2020 come parte della serie Conquer The West Trials iniziata nel 2017. Si tratta di un campionato con eventi di due giorni negli Stati Uniti occidentali dove i piloti prendono parte ad almeno quattro eventi per guadagnare punti verso le loro rispettive posizioni finali e si è ampliato per includere eventi di dieci-due giorni nel 2022”.

Il Montana è legato a prestigiosi ricordi del tuo glorioso passato, giusto?

“Il Montana è di particolare interesse per me da quando ho vinto quelle due prove del Nazionale che mi hanno lanciato al titolo nel 1982. Furono due gare in netto contrasto come difficoltà. Il primo National tenutosi a Bozeman il 3 luglio fu molto facile come si può intuire dal mio punteggio vincente di 7 punti, ma il secondo a Whitefish fu tutt'altro, lasciai 144 punti, che è ancora il punteggio più alto di vittoria nella storia del campionato nazionale degli Stati Uniti."

Alcuni di questi organizzatori fanno ancora parte di questo evento?

“Sì, è stato Rich Hilbun, nativo del Montana e organizzatore di quel secondo round nazionale a Whitefish, che recentemente ha avuto l'idea di contattarmi per tornare in occasione dell'anniversario per condurre una scuola di Trial. Il formato di cinque giorni è stato il risultato di successive discussioni insieme a Dan Larson di Mossy Rock Trials & Off-Road organizzatore e sponsor del The Whiskey Gulch Two-Day Trials, iniziato nel 2009 e che da allora si è svolto ogni anno senza interruzioni.

Qual è stata la tua reazione quando sei stato contattato?

“Assolutamente positivo, sono molto orgoglioso di essere Ospite d'Onore al Whisky Gulch Two Day Trials nello splendido stato del Montana. Lo stato dell'oro e d'argento dell'America (così identificato il Montana nda) è il sogno di ogni pilota di Trial per poter scoprire la guida fuoristrada. Rich Hilbun e Dan Larson di Mossy Rock Trials & Off-Road sono eccellenti organizzatori e insieme abbiamo escogitato un piano per farlo realizzare. È molto eccitante tornare nel 2022 per insegnare, correre e festeggiare in un luogo così memorabile. Chissà, potrei prendere di nuovo l'oro, ma sarò molto contento anche dell'argento!”(...sorridendo)

Quanto costa partecipare, hai già degli iscritti?

“Per i due giorni di scuola il costo è di 300 dollari americani, ma non guadagno un dollaro. Molti dei fondi della scuola vengono utilizzati per i pasti, regali, libri di formazione e altri oggetti. Le mie spese sono a carico degli sponsor. È incredibile che i 30 posti disponibili siano già stati esauriti in pochi giorni e ora ci sia già una lista d'attesa”

Matt Liberatore, che sta scrivendo i comunicati stampa, ha aggiunto i due commenti degli organizzatori Rich Hilbun e Dan Larson.

Hilbun, che ha contattato per primo Schreiber per il suo ritorno, ha detto:

“In quella seconda del Nazionale del 1982 a Whitefish, abbiamo impostato le sezioni in modo che fossero difficili perché il round precedente a Bozeman era stato troppoì facile. Ma Il tempo non ha collaborato e ha piovuto a dirotto. Ricordo che Bernie diceva che era come un round del campionato del mondo. È stato per noiun grande complimento. Abbiamo pensato di far tornare Bernie che ha fatto le sue scuole di Trial negli ultimi anni proprio per il 40° anniversario da quella gara. Siamo onorati di vedere il ritorno della leggenda del Trial negli Stati Uniti. Bernie ha avuto un tale impatto sullo sport allora e ancora oggi. Siamo tutti entusiasti di averlo come Ospite d'onore per la settimana delle prove di due giorni di Whisky Gulch del 2022”

Larson, proprietario del Mossy Rock Trials & Off Road dal 2011 è un concessionario TRS e Beta. Ha iniziato la sua attività riparando motociclette per i piloti di Trial, offrendo il suo supporto ai trialisti nell'area del Montana centro-sud. E' anche specializzato nel restauro di moto usate.
