04/05/24 - Bou makes it a poker in Geneva

Toni Bou (Repsol Honda Trial Team) claimed his fourth consecutive victory of 2024, but in the most difficult final, definitely too much, and consequently closest yet this season. Only in the final Section was Bou able to confirm victory ahead of Gabriel Marcelli and Toby Martyn in an all-Montesa podium.

Bou got the better of a Marcelli in great form, capable of defeating him in the opening round, raising the level of a challenging night. A second-Round crash for the 17-times World Champion wasn’t enough to deprive him of top spot after the nine qualifying Sections, but it was enough to leave him with an injured shoulder that restricted his later rides and ultimately his winning margin to just four marks.

Excellent performances in the challenging Section Three proved the basis for a strong night to Marcelli, giving him his first bonus point of the season in Round One, then bringing him back into contention in the Final. But ultimately his failure in Section One proved too costly for him to really take the fight to Bou, who was already 8 marks ahead after just the opening two Sections.

Toby Martyn secured the third podium of his career with an excellent Round Two display, seeing off Jaime Busto (GasGas) who was left to rue his three consecutive fiascos in Round One. Busto’s early elimination for the first time this season sees him slip behind Marcelli to third in the Championship.

Benoit Bincaz (Sherco) consolidated his place in the series’ top five, and therefore his qualification to X-Trial Andorra la Vella in October, by beating Matteo Grattarola (Beta). Just as in Chalon-Sur-Saône and Nice it was another miserable second run that ruined the Italian veteran’s night, as this time he went from only three marks behind the podium places to finish a disappointing seventh.

That allowed Gaël Chatagno to claim an impressive scalp after his strong second Round on his and Electric Motion’s X-Trial debut with sixth. Home rider Noé Pretalli (GasGas) completed the finishers, also on his debut.

Toni Bou (1st): “It has been a tough one today and plenty has happened, but a win is the best reward. In the first Round I misunderstood the rules in Section Four. Then I dominated Round Two until I rushed a bit in the last Section and hurt my shoulder in a crash. That meant I never really felt comfortable in the Final even if I started very well. I am happier with the result than my riding: four wins out of four so far and winning here in Geneva as I did when we last visited twelve years ago.”

Gabriel Marcelli (2nd): “This is a great result and I have to enjoy it. I rode at a very high level in Round One which gave me the bonus point. Then I was second in Round Two and in the Final. In the end a mistake in Section One left me too far from the fight for the win. But it has been a great night and these are good points for the Championship.”

Toby Martyn (3rd): “I am happy to be back on the podium at World Championship level. We have really worked hard this season so far, so this is a great reward. The course was very demanding in all of the Rounds but especially the Final, but the important thing is the result.”

The FIM X-Trial World Championship now heads into its summer break before returning for X-Trial Andorra la Vella on 5th October.

Bou fa poker a Ginevra!

Toni Bou (Repsol Honda Trial Team) ha ottenuto la sua quarta vittoria consecutiva del 2024, ma nella finale più difficile , decisamente troppo, e quindi ravvicinata di questa stagione. Solo nella sezione finale Bou è riuscito a confermare la vittoria davanti a Gabriel Marcelli e Toby Martyn in un podio tutto Montesa.

Bou ha avuto ragione di un Marcelli in gran forma, capace di sconfiggerlo nel round di apertura, alzando il livello ad una serata impegnativa. Una caduta al secondo round per il 17 volte campione del mondo non è stata sufficiente a privarlo del primo posto, dopo le nove sezioni di qualificazione, ma è stata sufficiente a lasciarlo con un infortunio alla spalla che lo ha limitato nelle zone successive e, in definitiva, il suo margine di vittoria a solo quattro punti.

Le ottime prestazioni nell'impegnativa Sezione Tre hanno costituito la base per una serata forte per Marcelli, regalandogli il suo primo punto bonus della stagione nel primo round, per poi riportarlo in corsa nella finale. Ma alla fine il suo cinque nella prima zona si è rivelato fatale per poter combattere davvero contro Bou, già in vantaggio di 8 punti dopo solo le prime due sezioni.

Toby Martyn si è assicurato il terzo podio della sua carriera con un'eccellente prestazione nel secondo round, eliminando Jaime Busto (GasGas) che è stato lasciato a rimpiangere i suoi tre fiaschi consecutivi nel primo round. L'eliminazione anticipata di Busto per la prima volta in questa stagione lo fa scivolare dietro Marcelli al terzo posto in campionato.

Benoit Bincaz (Sherco) ha consolidato il suo posto nella top five della serie, e quindi la sua qualificazione all'X-Trial Andorra la Vella di ottobre, battendo il nostro Matteo Grattarola (Beta). Proprio come a Chalon-Sur-Saône e a Nizza, è stata un'altra misera seconda manche a rovinare la notte del veterano azzurro, passato da soli tre punti dietro al podio per finire con un deludente settimo.

Ciò ha permesso a Gaël Chatagno di ottenere un traguardo impressionante dopo il suo ottimo secondo round al debutto all'X-Trial alla guida dell' Electric Motion con il sesto posto. Chiude la classifica il pilota di casa Noé Pretalli (GasGas), anche lui al debutto.

Toni Bou (1°): “È stata dura oggi e sono successe molte cose, ma una vittoria è la migliore ricompensa. Nel primo turno ho frainteso le regole della Sezione Quattro. Poi ho dominato il secondo round finché non ho corso un po' nell'ultima sezione e mi sono fatto male alla spalla in una caduta. Ciò significa che non mi sono mai sentito veramente a mio agio in Finale, anche se sono partito molto bene. Sono più soddisfatto del risultato della mia guida: quattro vittorie su quattro finora e una vittoria qui a Ginevra come ho fatto l’ultima volta che ci siamo stati, dodici anni fa”.

Gabriel Marcelli (2°): “Questo è un grande risultato e devo godermelo. Ho corso ad un livello molto alto nel primo round, il che mi ha dato il punto bonus. Poi sono arrivato secondo nel secondo round e in finale. Alla fine un errore nella prima sezione mi ha lasciato troppo lontano dalla lotta per la vittoria. Ma è stata una serata fantastica e questi sono ottimi punti per il campionato”.

Toby Martyn (3°): “Sono felice di tornare sul podio a livello di Campionato del mondo. Finora abbiamo lavorato davvero duro in questa stagione, quindi questa è una grande ricompensa. Il percorso è stato molto impegnativo in tutte le prove ma soprattutto nella Finale, ma l'importante è il risultato."

Il Campionato Mondiale FIM X-Trial si avvia ora verso la pausa estiva prima di tornare per l'X-Trial Andorra la Vella il 5 ottobre.
