12/07/24 - WOMEN COMPETING IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: FORGOTTEN AND UNKNOWN?

The women of the Trial World Championship, forgotten and unknown? The title is certainly provocative, but unfortunately there is a grain of truth. History teaches that only sporadically before the establishment of a world championship, there were examples of courageous girls/women who tried their hand at the sport of Trial.

The literature tells us about participation in the Six Days of Scotland, which is undoubtedly echoed by that of the Californian Debbie Evans in 1978 on her Yamaha TY 175, with which she is still known today for the upside-down surplace on the saddle – video that can easily be found on Youtube. The nice American stuntman has then promptly responded to our invitation to Torre Pellice, twenty years later, to one of the first international meetings, preparatory to the establishment of the world recognition in 2000. Debbie then continued to run for several more years after that casual restart.

In those years there was a lot of enthusiasm, finally a Nations Trial and a women's World Championship, initially in a single event, then slowly increased in number of races.

Having been responsible for the international meetings held on Monte Vandalino, Torre Pellice, in the years 1997,1998 and 1999 ( http://www.phototrial.it/2013wc/99-donne.html) – even if no one ever recognized it, – it had given us immense pleasure, as well as witnessing a movement in full expansion.

Then something in the gear jammed. The evolution of vehicles and the stunts required to ride them have narrowed the universe of those capable of attempting them. In Italy the national championship consists of only 4 people! That hidden chauvinism that has always accompanied those responsible for the development and regulation of our sport has often had the upper hand and ended up discouraging potential new recruits from the start.

The current edition of the world championship makes it seem like there is a new positive trend, with 15 girls in TrialGP and 17 in Trial2.

We will never stop saying that it is a big mistake not to adequately consider the women's sector. Nowadays, through social media, information and photographs can travel around the world in seconds.

DONNE IN GARA AL MONDIALE: DIMENTICATE E SCONOSCIUTE?

Le donne del mondiale Trial, dimenticate e sconosciute? Titolo provocatorio certamente, ma un fondo di verità purtroppo sussiste. La storia insegna che solo sporadicamente prima dell'istituzione di un campionato del mondo, ci sono stati esempi di cor ose ragazze/donne che si sono cimentate nello sport del Trial.

La letteratura ci parla di partecipazioni alla Sei Giorni di Scozia, a cui fa indubbiamente eco quella della californiana Debbie Evans nel 1978 sulla sua Yamaha TY 175, con la quale ancora oggi rimane conosciuta per il surplace a testa in giù sulla sella – video che si trova facilmente su Youtube. La simpatica stuntman americana ha poi prontamente risposto al nostro invito a Torre Pellice, vent'anni dopo, ad uno dei primi meeting internazionali, propedeutici all'istituzione del riconoscimento mondiale del 2000. Debbie ha poi continuato a correre per altri diversi anni dopo quella casuale ripresa.

In quegli anni c'era molto entusiasmo, finalmente un Trial delle Nazioni e un Campionato del Mondo femminile, inizialmente in prova unica, poi piano piano maggiorato come numero di gare.

Essere stati artefici con i meeting internazionali disputati sul Monte Vandalino, Torre Pellice, negli anni 1997,1998 e 1999 ( http://www.phototrial.it/2013wc/99-donne.html) – anche se nessuno ce lo ha mai riconosciuto, – ci aveva fatto immensamente piacere, come anche assistere a un movimento in piena espansione.

Poi qualcosa nell'ingranaggio si è inceppato. L'evoluzione dei mezzi e le acrobazie che richiedono per cavalcarli hanno ristretto l'universo di quelle in grado di cimentarsi. In Italia il campionato nazionale consta di solo 4 persone! Quel celato maschilismo che da sempre accompagna chi è preposto allo sviluppo e alla regolamentazione del nostro sport , spesso ha avuto il sopravvento e finito per scoraggiare in partenza le possibili nuove leve.

L'attuale edizione del mondiale fa sembrare ci sia un ritrovato trending positivo , con 15 ragazze in TrialGp e ben 17 in Trial2.

Non smetteremo mai di affermare che si tratta di un grosso errore non considerare adeguatamente il settore femminile. Oggi poi che attraverso i social informazioni e fotografie possono fare il giro del mondo in secondi.
