06/03/22 - The firat 10 years of Motegi under the sign of Fujinami -

This season Takahisa Fujinami will make his debut in the world championship with the role of Team Manager, but he will not be able to do it at Motegi in the Twing Ring circuit because the grand prix has been canceled.

Phototrial was the only magazine present at all the first 10 editions of the Japanese Grand Prix: from 2000 to 2009 Mario Candellone and Agnese Andrione took more than a thousand photos on race weekends within the circuit. Present when the press rooms were crammed with journalists, in the case of Motegi, almost entirely Japanese's.

There was no FIM press office that took care of taking pictures and sending press releases. Those present collaborated with various magazines to spread the news around the world. Personally, I wrote for Cycle News, a US weekly that covered all motorcycle specialties and Trials Competition, a US monthly in the sector.

The world race in a circuit was first discovered in this location and then attempted to replicate in other realities, such as France or Guatemala. But the variety of natural sections - in addition to those deliberately set up with immense care near the start - have never been rivals. For this reason, still today, racing the world championship in Japan means going to Motegi.

The photos taken at the time were carefully chosen and printed in a book sold at the end of the year. In the last volume, that of 2009, Phototrial wanted to draw up a curious ranking, taking into consideration all the results obtained at Motegi in the first ten years.

The winner of this ranking was the eternal second, world champion in 2004 and able to win a world championship round even in his last year of activity, the number one as a sympathy of the crowds: the evergreen Takahisa Fijinami.

Let's retrace those ten steps, giving you a quick report of what happened.

10,11-06-2000

Great expectations for this debut in the Land of the Rising Sun and in a world motoGP circuit. In the past, only international indoor events had taken place to which the best world pilots were invited. The audience responded with great enthusiasm: around 20,000 spectators. Takumi Narita, world pilot in the 90s, still active in his country at the time, traced the sections.

The number one was Dougie Lampkin, fresh off the move to Montesa-Honda after the three titles won on the Beta. Fujinami already had a good reputation for his reckless riding, with jumps and gas shots, hence the name Fujigas, which he liked to the point of having it written on his helmet.

On Saturday, the predictions were confirmed in the two laps of 15 zones each. Victory for Lampkin and second place for Fujinami, recovering after the fourth position in the middle of the race. Lampkin again on Sunday but forced to chase, 2 points behind his main rivals, Fujigas and Marc Colomer - world champion in 1996 - tied in the lead with 15 errors. A masterpiece second lap of the Englishman with only 5 points restored the hierarchies. Fujinami (15) finished second and Colomer (22) third. Marcel Justribò was on the podium on Saturday.

02,03-06-2001

The hegemony of the British rider, family tradition, continued, having in Fujinami the only real antagonist. The season offered a tour de force: GP of Japan and to follow US GP in the West fortunately. Just one week to move the Circus on a world tour always to the East, which favors jet-lag. Motorcycles were not shipped in those years.

At the local importers, the official riders mounted their special parts - often carried as hand luggage - on new bikes made available. After the race, the special parts were off and the bikes could be sold as almost new.

Easy race on Saturday, wanted by the FIM, because the one before run in Belgium had been heavy scores. Lampkin was not wrong, with a peremptory 1, followed by a 4, put the Japanese behind, guilty of 4 and 11 errors. First podium for English Steve Colley. A slight clamp down on sections did not change the values ??on Sunday. Lampkin made fun of his opponents: 11 penalties against Fujinami's 26 in second and Adam Raga's 32 in third.

07,08-09-2002

This was the closing round of the world championship, which was reached with Lampkin leading by 34 points over Fujinami. In reality, after a quick start by the Englishman, able to put in 5 victories in a row, the following grands prix were more balanced, with the Japanese on the top step of the podium on three other occasions.

Indeed on Saturday the first victory at Motegi of the home idol came. A tough race due to the muddy ground due to the heavy rains of the previous days. In both laps the difference between the two champions was only one point. The final score: 72 to 74 in favor of Fujigas. Third David Cobos with 88 penalties.

With Lampkin already champion on Sunday honored the fresh title by returning the same stake to Fujinami: victory of 2 points. Third the other Japanese protagonist of the 90s world championship, Kenichi Kuroyama.

31-05,01-06-2003

The year of the sensational strike of the riders - those who could afford it - not the Honda Montesa officers. In reality, the strike had been made in a Spanish championship round, but the repercussions were not long in coming at an international level. Since already then many of the top riders were Spanish, with the disqualification of these ones at the first two world rounds, the schedules of the manufacturers in question have been revised.

Cut off from the possibility of competing for the world title, Gas Gas and Beta did not send their top riders to Motegi.

Nothing detracts to Fujinami's supremacy on Saturday ahead of English Graham Jarvis and Lampkin. Leading from the start, he finished 19 points behind the second. Only Jarvis - in a moment of grace - managed to beat Fujinami by only one point to win on Sunday.

Still third the reigning champion Lampkin, achieved in the overall standings in the score and surpassed by Fujinami as the highest number of prestigious results (3 wins to 1). But at the end of the year the response will still be the same. Lampkin champion and Fujinami deputy, albeit much closer.

22,23-05-2004

Japanese event as the third of the world championship and first time in which Fujinami won both days. Curious: once again he reached Lampkin in the overall standings and overtook him to have one more victory in the pipeline, just like the previous year but there was Raga in the game, too: before Motegi he was leading.

Easy race on Saturday despite the light rain. Lampkin runner-up in front of Raga. The race on Sunday was still easy and on the wire. All the podium in one point. Fujinami beats by 2 zeros Lampkin who had reached him by cleaning the whole second lap. Both scored 12, with Marc Freixa 13!

Debut for the 4-stroke Honda, still under development ,in the hands of Tomoyuchi Ogawa.

21,22-05-2005

For the first time Fujinami showed up with bib number one and riding the 4-stroke. After two unimpressive rounds lasting only one day, in Portugal and Spain, here he was perky in front of his audience.

Bright sun on Saturday with a very uncertain first lap and Fujinami only fourth, but then thanks to a second masterpiece lap, he managed to rise and emerged from the pressure of the number one bib.

Still good weather and dry ground with very low scores on Sunday. Albert Cabestany's for the first time, ahead of Lampkin and Fujinami. On the first lap Raga made no mistakes, but then a five and two dabs on the second made him lose the podium. Cabestany took the lead in the championship, followed by Raga (future champion) then Lampkin and Fujinami.

03,04-06-2006

First time for Toni Bou, still in Beta, and first time off the podium for Fujinami on the first day, fifth round of the championship.

A lot of balance with Fujinami in full recovery, but a "5" in the third to last section was fatal. Bou flew off to take his second world win with 44 points. Raga and Cabestany overtook him (47) and he finished in fourth with 49 errors.

On Sunday Cabestany flew in front of Raga with Lampkin on the podium. Bou failed to repeat himself, slipping to seventh position while Fujinami was still fourth.

02,03-06-2007

And here we started the Bou era. Fresh from his passage to Honda-Montesa, he slipped 4 consecutive wins in the races that preceded Motegi and his march continued even in the first of the two Japanese days.

Raga came in second and Fujinami returned to the podium, but very detached from the first two. Final scores of 6 for Bou, 11 Raga and 42 for the Japanese. In the second round first stop for Bou, however second, beaten by the reigning champion Raga in his first success of the season. Fujinami still in third. This time the gaps were much smaller: 9, 11 and 18 respectively.

In the overall standings Bou had 14 points clear of Raga, with Fuji third.

31-05,01-06-2008

Again fifth round of the season reached with the new champion Bou in the lead but with Fujinami very close behind by just 7 points. Very hard trial, also due to the heavy rain on Saturday and the harsh sections featured due to the fear of repeating the easy race of the previous year.

Bou peremptory managed to win it with 71 penalties. Raga beat Fujigas in the final: 97 and 103 were their scores.

The sun shone on Sundays and 9 zones were simplified, so the scores dropped. After a balanced first lap with Bou and Fuji equal to 23, Bou took off in the second and Raga recovered by overtaking Fuji: therefore the same final order as on Saturday. In the standings Bou led by 15 points over Raga, two points ahead of Fuji, now third.

06,07-06-2009

Sixth round, Bou winner of 4 of the previous 5, Raga - author of the other victory – chased him in the championship, while Fujinami was even seventh, having retired on Saturday in Great Britain due to a bad back fall.

But racing at home gave him such a boost that he only bowed to Bou, in full form, on Saturday in a race where Bou left 6 points and Fuji 21! On the podium Raga.

Great head-to-head between Bou and Fuji on the second day. Fuji led but was reached by Bou and beaten by a clean! The battle for third place in favor of Raga against Lampkin was resolved by a clean, too.

In the championship unchanged the top positions but Fujinami jumped to fourth place and then reached third at the end of the championship. Not bad for someone who hasn't collected any points in a round.

I primi 10 anni di Motegi, sotto il segno di Fujinami

In questa stagione Takahisa Fujinami esordirà al mondiale con il ruolo di Team Manager, ma non lo potrà fare a Motegi nel circuito Twing Ring perchè il gran premio è stato annullato.

Phototrial è stata l'unica testata giornalistica presente a tutte le prime 10 edizioni del Gran Premio del Giappone: dal 2000 al 2009 Mario Candellone e Agnese Andrione hanno scattato più di mille foto nei week-end di gare all'interno del circuito. Presenti quando le sale stampa erano stipate di giornalisti, nel caso di Motegi, quasi interamente giapponesi.

Non esisteva un ufficio stampa della FIM che si occupasse di scattare foto e inviare comunicati stampa. I presenti collaboravano con diverse testate per diffondere nel mondo le notizie. Personalmente scrivevo per Cycle News, settimanale statunitense che copriva tutte le specialità motociclistiche e Trials Competition, mensile sempre statunitense di settore.

La gara mondiale in un circuito fu scoperta per la prima volta in questa località e poi tentata di replicare in altre realtà, vedi Francia o Guatemala. Ma la varietà di zone naturali – oltre a quelle volutamente costruite con immensa cura vicino alla partenza – non hanno mai avuto rivali. Per questo ancora oggi, correre il mondiale in Giappone, significa andare a Motegi.

Le foto scattate all'epoca venivano oculatamente scelte e stampate in un libro venduto a fine anno. Nell'ultimo volume, quello del 2009, Phototrial ha voluto stilare una curiosa classifica, prendendo in esame tutti i risultati ottenuti a Motegi nei primi dieci anni.

Vincitore di questa classifica è stato proprio lui, l'eterno secondo, campione del mondo nel 2004 e in grado di vincere una gara del mondiale anche nel suo ultimo anno di attività, il numero uno come simpatia delle folle: il sempreverde Takahisa Fijinami.

Ripercorriamo quelle dieci tappe, dandovi una rapida cronaca di quanto accaduto.

10,11-06-2000

Grande attesa per questo esordio del Paese del Sol Levante nel circuito del mondiale. In passato si erano solo svolti degli indoor internazionali a cui erano stati invitati i piloti migliori. Il pubblico risponde con grande entusiasmo: circa 20000 spettatori

. A tracciare le zone ci pensa Takumi Narita, pilota mondiale negli anni 90, all'epoca ancora in attività nel suo Paese.

Il numero uno è Dougie Lampkin, fresco del passaggio alla Montesa-Honda dopo i tre titoli stra-vinti sulla Beta. Fujinami ha già una discreta fama per la sua guida spericolata, con salti e colpi di gas, da qui l'appellativo Fujigas, a lui piaciuto al punto di farselo scrivere sul casco.

Al sabato, nei due giri di 15 zone ciascuno si confermano i pronostici. Vittoria a Lampkin e secondo posto per Fujinami, in recupero dopo la quarta posizione a metà gara.

Ancora Lampkin alla domenica ma costretto ad inseguire, 2 punti dietro ai suoi principali rivali, Fujigas e Marc Colomer – iridato nel 1996 – appaiati in testa con 15 errori. Un secondo giro capolavoro dell'inglese con soli 5 punti ristabilisce le gerarchie. Fujinami (15) finisce secondo e Colomer (22) terzo. Sul podio sabato era salito Marcel Justribò.

02,03-06-2001

Continua l'egemonia del britannico figlio d'arte, che ha in Fujinami l'unico vero antagonista. La stagione propone un tour de force: GP del Giappone e a seguire GP USA nell'Ovest fortunatamente. Una sola settimana per spostare il Circus in un giro del mondo sempre verso Est, che favorisce il jet-lag.

Non si spedivano le moto in quegli anni. Presso gli importatori locali i piloti ufficiali montavano i loro pezzi speciali – spesso portati come bagaglio a mano - su moto nuove messe a disposizione. Finita la gara, via i pezzi speciali e le moto potevano venire vendute come quasi nuove.

Gara facile al sabato, voluta dalla FIM, perchè si era corso in Belgio prima e i punteggi erano stati pesanti. Non sbaglia Lampkin, che con un perentorio 1, seguito da un 4, si mette alle spalle il giapponese, colpevole di 4 e 11 errori. Primo podio per l'inglese Steve Colley.

Un leggero giro di vite non cambia i valori alla domenica. Lampkin si prende gioco dei suoi avversari: 11 penalità contro le 26 di Fujinami secondo e le 32 di Adam Raga terzo.

07,08-09-2002

Si tratta della gara di chiusura del mondiale, a cui si giunge con Lampkin in vantaggio di 34 punti su Fujinami. In realtà dopo una partenza lampo dell'inglese, in grado di infilare 5 successi consecutivi, i gran premi successivi furono di maggiore equilibrio, con il giapponese sul gradino più alto del podio in altre tre occasioni.

Infatti al sabato arriva la prima vittoria a Motegi dell'idolo di casa. Una gara dura per il terreno pesante dovuto alle abbondanti piogge dei giorni precedenti. In entrambi i giri la differenza fra i due fuoriclasse è di un solo punto. Il punteggio finale: 72 a 74 a favore di Fujigas. Terzo David Cobos con 88 penalità.

Con Lampkin già campione la domenica onora il fresco titolo restituendo la stessa posta a Fujinami: vittoria di 2 punti. Terzo l'altro nipponico protagonista dei mondiali anni 90, Kenichi Kuroyama.

31-05,01-06-2003

L'anno del clamoroso sciopero dei piloti – quelli che potevano permetterselo – non gli ufficiali Honda Montesa. In realtà lo sciopero era stato fatto a una gara del campionato spagnolo, ma le ripercussioni non si sono fatte attendere a livello internazionale. Siccome già allora molti dei piloti di vertice erano spagnoli, con la squalifica di questi alle prime due prove mondiali, le pianificazioni delle Case dei piloti in questione sono state riviste.

Tagliati fuori dalla possibilità di giocarsi il mondiale, Gas Gas e Beta non inviarono i loro piloti di punta a Motegi.

Nulla toglie alla supremazia di Fujinami al sabato davanti all'inglese Graham Jarvis e Lampkin. In testa dall'inizio ha concluso con 19 punti di distacco sul secondo.

Proprio Jarvis in momento di grazia riesce a battere Fujinami di un solo punto a aggiudicarsi la vittoria alla domenica. Sempre terzo il campione in carica Lampkin, raggiunto in campionato nel punteggio e superato come maggior numero di risultati prestigiosi (3 vittorie a 1) da Fujinami.

Ma a fine anno il responso sarà ancora lo stesso. Lampkin campione e Fujinami vice, seppur molto più vicino.

22,23-05-2004

Tappa giapponese come terza del mondiale e prima volta in cui Fujinami vince entrambe la giornate. Curioso: ancora una volta raggiunge in campionato Lampkin e lo supera per avere in cantiere una vittoria in più, proprio come l'anno precedente ma c'è anche Raga in partita: prima di Motegi era lui in testa.

Gara facile al sabato nonostante la lieve pioggia. Secondo Lampkin davanti a Raga.

Sempre facile e sul filo di lana la gara domenica. Un podio in un solo punto. Fujinami batte per 2 zeri Lampkin che lo aveva raggiunto girando a zero la seconda tornata. Entrambi a quota 12, con Marc Freixa a 13! Esordio per l'Honda 4 tempi in mano a Tomoyuchi Ogawa, ancora in fase di messa a punto.

21,22-05-2005

Per la prima volta Fujinami si presenta col pettorale numero uno e alla guida del 4-tempi. Dopo due prove incolore di un giorno soltanto in Portogallo e Spagna, eccolo pimpante davanti al suo pubblico.

Sole splendente al sabato con un primo giro molto incerto e Fujinami solo quarto, ma poi grazie a un secondo giro capolavoro, gli riesce di svettare e sboccarsi dalla pressione del dorsale numero uno.

Ancora bel tempo e terreno secco con punteggi bassissimi alla domenica. Prima volta di Albert Cabestany, davanti a Lampkin e Fujinami. Al primo giro Raga non aveva commesso errori, ma poi un cinque e due “1” al secondo gli hanno fatto perdere il podio.

In campionato balza in testa Cabestany, seguito da Raga (futuro campione) quindi Lampkin e Fujinami.

03,04-06-2006

Prima volta di Toni Bou, ancora in Beta, e prima volta fuori da podio per Fujinami nella prima giornata, quinta prova del campionato.

Molto equilibrio con Fujinami in pieno recupero, ma un “5” alla terzultima gli è fatale. Bou si invola alla conquista della sua seconda vittoria in campionato con 44 punti. Raga e Cabestany lo scavalcano (47) e lui conclude quarto con 49 errori.

Vola Cabestany alla domenica davanti a Raga con Lampkin sul podio. Non riesce a ripetersi Bou, scivolato in settima posizione mentre Fujinami è ancora quarto.

02,03-06-2007

Ed eccoci entrati nell'era Bou. Fresco del passaggio in Honda-Montesa infila 4 successi consecutivi nelle gare che precedono Motegi e la sua marcia continua anche nel primo dei due giorni giapponesi.

Raga giunge secondo e Fujinami ritorna sul podio, ma molto staccato dai primi due. Punteggi finali di 6 per Bou, 11 Raga e 42 al giapponese.

Nella seconda giornata primo stop per Bou, comunque secondo, battuto dal campione in carica Raga al suo primo successo stagionale. Ancora Fujinami terzo incomodo. Questa volta i distacchi sono molto più contenuti: 9,11 e 18 rispettivamente.

In campionato Bou ha 14 punti di vantaggio su Raga, con Fuji terzo.

31-05,01-06-2008

Nuovamente quinta prova stagionale a cui ci si arriva con il neo campione Bou in testa ma con Fujinami secondo staccato di appena 7 punti.

Trial durissimo, complice anche la pesante pioggia al sabato e le zone inasprite nel timore di ripetere la gara facile dell'anno prima. Bou perentorio riesce ad aggiudicarsela con 71 penalità. Raga batte Fujigas nel finale: 97 e 103 i loro score.

Splende il sole alla domenica e vengono semplificate 9 zone, così i punteggi calano. Dopo un equilibrato primo giro con Bou e Fuji pari a 23, Bou prende il volo nel secondo e Raga recupera scavalcando Fuji: quindi stesso ordine finale del sabato. In campionato Bou conduce di 15 punti su Raga, due punti davanti a Fuji, ora terzo.

06,07-06-2009

Sesto appuntamento, Bou vincitore di 4 dei 5 precedenti, Raga – autore dell'altra vittoria - lo insegue in campionato, mentre Fujinami è addirittura settimo, per essersi ritirato al sabato in Gran Bretagna a causa di una brutta caduta di schiena.

Ma il correre in casa gli dà una carica tale da inchinarsi solo a Bou, in piena forma, al sabato in una gara dove Bou ha lasciato 6 punti e Fuji 21! Sul podio Raga.

Grande testa a testa fra Bou e Fuji nella seconda giornata. Avanti Fuji poi raggiunto da Bou e battuto per uno zero! Risolta per uno zero anche la battaglia per il terzo posto a favore di Raga nei confronti di Lampkin.

In campionato invariate le prime posizioni ma Fujinami balza al quarto posto per poi giungere terzo a fine campionato. Niente male per uno che non ha raccolto punti in una gara.
