30/07/23 - Keity Meier: from Estonia to TrialGP Women

Who is Keity Meier? A beautiful Estonian girl who has made and is making Trial her life. She is 28 years old and discovered Trial at the age of 15, but not because of a family tradition as usually happens, especially in the women's field, but because she became passionate about off-road by watching videos on Youtube.

Being able to actually grow up where female emancipation is not in question and therefore riding mini off-road motorcycles together with the boys had a big help. Maybe even lucky to find a professor at school who happened to be a promoter of Trial in her country.

But after starting, she strongly wanted to continue alone, supporting herself with shows, one above all: the jump of two skyscrapers in the capital Tallinn. Then also many roles as a stunt-woman.

All to afford to cross Europe on hes van where she lives together with hes partner Krystel, not yet involved as a Trial pilot. Trips to attend the world championship in the TrialGP Women class.

She hasn't achieved striking sporting results - the best in Trial2 Women is a fourth place, in TrialGp a seventh - but she does a great job of promoting the Trial with various shows in her country, just look at the photos she posts on her Instagram profile of great visual impact.

While boasting a degree in Music, as a guitarist, his future lies entirely in the world of off-road motorcycles. She may also stop racing in the world championship but her life sees her as a Trial instructor in Estonia or around the world if someone were to organize...

When did you start in Trial?
When I was 15 but before Trial, I was riding mini dirt bikes: I was doing a sort of mini-Enduro in a forest near home, I was 11, or 12.

Lucky to have the forest, where exactly?
Tapa. It's a small village, 100 km South of Tallin.

From where this passion for motorcycles arrives? Your father? Elder brother?
None of them. In my family there isn't any tradition on motorsport. We are five children and I am the oldest. I simply watched videos on Youtube and love any sport off-road with motorbikes. I wanted to be on a bike. I didn't know what kind of bike but I know that it had to have two wheels.

Any particular hero that you followed?
I was mad for Travis Pastrana, (motocross, freestyle American champion nda). Yeah it's crazy. I remember he was my role model, I didn't have any role models from Estonia because none was involved in the stuff that I was interested in. Of course we had some great motocross riders but that was too classical. I just liked him maybe because he was some crazy stuff.

At that time did you were student? What did you study?
I was 15 and I was in elementary school and also in music school. I was learning to play guitar, then I was graduated in this field.

And how happened that you meet Trial?
It was my teacher that let me discovered Trial. Many times I skipped the school to go to ride mini dirt bikes in the forest and he knew it! So since he was promoting Trial in Estonia, he invited me to see a two-day event, where I had the chance to ride a Beta 125cc.

How did you feel riding it?
It was weird, everything was different, first the position. I was riding it for two days and then he became my first coach. He said that he can lend me the bike for a couple times a week. We could start to train because he saw the potential in me. And then I get the ball rolling...

What about your parents? Were they in favor of this sport or not?
Well, they never said no, but they also didn't have the opportunities to buy me bikes or anything like that because I'm from a big family: I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers, the youngest is two.

So you had to find sponsors very early to cope with Trial?
Yes, with the help of my teacher and then the Beta importer I got a bike. These two guys have played a key role in my career.

When did you start in competition world?
I did my first European race in 2012, in Zelhem, Holland. I just went there to see what other girls were doing. I registered for the championship class. But watching the sections I changed to International class. I won it and it was very good , like a boost for me.

Which bikes did you ride?
After Beta, 2 Sherco' s, I rode 4 or 5 Gas Gas. In the last 3 years I have been riding TRRS. I reached an agreement with Jordi Tarres. The factory supports me.

Do you have an other job or you are a professional trial rider?
No I don't do other. As you know, it's difficult to make money with trials. But all what I do is connected somehow with the mission to promote trial as I see as very interesting sport, lots of challenges and thinking! I am happy that trials has given me opportunity and skills to be in Show Business.

Yes, I saw you jumping between two skyscrapers, where was it? Why this crazy idea?
Yeah, It was in Tallin. It happened that every time that I was looking for sponsors in Estonia to ride the championship, I was asked what Trials was and who I am. Nobody knew this sport. So my friends and I decided to invent something to bring Trials out of the forest. And we came up with this crazy idea. Actually to stop this sport dying we all have to invent the ways how to get this sport more closer to people. At the moment it looks more like top secret organization.

. You play the role of Federations, compliments! Were you scare of this?
Of course, I was not sleeping for a month. The preparation lasted half a year because it was without any kind of really safety for me. It was only safe for the spectators. But after that it was very good. At least my name in Estonia is now known to every person owner of a bike.

I also saw a picture of you jumping through a ring of fire, how was that?
It was a premiere night of short documentary about me and my Swisshotel stunt. It was organized in the cinema and we did not want to do just a movie night but something extra.

Are there many trial riders in Estonia? How is the off-road bike market?
I think we have about 80 or 90 riders in total. The market is small but I teach Trial and I have students from other disciplines like Enduro and Motocross sports. If you learn to ride in trial, then you can ride easily the other's. It is a kind of Bible of off-road motorsports. Actually most of the riders are young in Estonia, so we might have little moto heroes coming....

After all you made a choice when you were very young to start in Trial instead of Motocross, what convinced you? Yes, I remember that I was about to buy a motocross bike,a Yamaha 125. I was already talking to my parents, like, please, please, please, ...but then I tried that trial bike and that man - then become my coach - said that I have some potential. Difficult choice. I was in my bed in the night and thinking, what would be the best option... If I bought this motocross bike, maybe I was a bit too old to start, because I was already 15. While in Trials, first somebody said I have potential, but also it looks kinda weird.

You are a girl and nobody in your family inspired you riding Trial, that is what I find weird!
It's normal . What is funny in Estonia that we have a lot of young Trial riders coming. We have boys and girls, without distinction.

Are you training alone or with somebody?
When I'm in Estonia, I am training mostly alone, because there is not many people who will come for example on Wednesday, at 1 p.m. they're working. So I'm mostly alone, but often I am practicing in Finland, It is about two hours by ferry-boat. Tommy Ahvala, with his Electric Motion is practicing there. In winter time I go to Spain for training.

I see your van, it is also used as a camper site, are you traveling alone?
Yes, I sleep inside. I travel with my girlfriend, Kristel, she helps me in finding sponsors and organize meetings. A manager, chef and content creator (smiling).

I remember that last year you went to the Trial Park of Asiago for training, how was it?
Yes, I went the week before the world round in Italy, in Ponte di Legno. It was very nice, very big and and quite difficult area because it was raining a bit on those days and there were a lot of places where no bikes have been to , I loved it!

Quite difficult? We had a couple of vintage competitions there. Just about vintage I saw you riding a Kawasaki KT 250 and your comment was that you found it sexy, what do you mean?
(...laughing) Oh, I meant it was a nice experience, but soon I found many differences, No clutch, response of throttle a bit late... Anyway practicing a little, I enjoyed it. I like old bikes.

Are you competing in world and European championship?
Only in the world's this year. I am focusing only on TrialGP and it's quite expensive. It's not too easy to get the budget.

About the Rules, do you like no-stop or not?And park-ferme?
( ...making a face) no, I do not like it. I mean if you are riding old bikes and you do not have good brakes, it could also works, but with our bikes, stopping before an obstacle is even safer. In Estonia competitions to stop is allowed. About the park-ferme, the fact that you have only 10 minutes to fix your bike is indifferent for official riders that have a lot of mechanics to help, for me it is a difficult more.

Do you have other hobbies? Do you like other sports? I like hiking in the mountains, after this competition, we will go to Dolomiti, before returning home. I go to the gym, but it is to improve my riding. For me it is quite important to be in good fitness to ride trials. If you are weak and with no stamina then it is hard to keep the rhythm be focused for a long time.

What are you plans for the future? Children? Trial forever?
(..smiling) I have not many plans, for sure I want motorsport in my whole life. if I'm not racing anymore that is probably, I will teach because I don't teach enough right now in Estonia, I don't know if I will participate to the world championship next year. It depends if I’ll find opportunities to fill my budget to continue.

Keity Meier: dall'Estonia alla TrialGP Women

Chi è Keity Meier? Una bellissima ragazza estone che ha fatto e sta facendo del Trial la sua vita. Ha 28 anni e ha scoperto il Trial all'età di 15, ma non per una tradizione di famiglia come normalmente succede, soprattutto nel campo femminile, ma perchè si è appassionata di fuoristrada guardando i video su Youtube.

Un grosso aiuto lo ha avuto, il poter crescere in realtà dove l'emancipazione femminile non è in discussione e quindi guidare delle mini moto da fuoristrada insieme ai maschietti. Magari anche fortunata nel trovare un professore a scuola che casualmente fosse promotore di Trial nel suo Paese.

Ma dopo aver iniziato, ha voluto fortemente continuare da sola, mantenendosi con degli spettacoli, uno sopra tutti: il salto di due grattaceli nella capitale Tallin. Poi molte volte nel ruolo di controfigura nei film.

Tutto per permettersi di attraversare l'Europa sul suo furgone-van dove vive insieme alla sua compagna Krystel, per ora non ancora coinvolta come pilota di Trial. Viaggi per presenziare al campionato del mondo nella classe TrialGP Women.

Non ha raggiunto risultati sportivi eclatanti – il migliore nella Trial2 Women è un quarto posto, nella TrialGp un settimo – ma a favore del Trial svolge un grandissimo lavoro di promozione con spettacoli vari nel suo Paese, basta vedere le foto che posta sul suo profilo Instagram, di grande impatto visivo.

Pur vantando una laurea in Musica, come chitarrista, il suo futuro è tutto nel mondo delle moto fuoristrada. Potrà anche smettere di correre nel mondiale ma la sua vita la vede come istruttrice di Trial in Estonia o in giro per il mondo se qualcuno dovesse organizzare...

Quando hai iniziato nel Trial?
Quando avevo 15 anni ma prima del Trial, guidavo delle mini moto da cross: stavo facendo una sorta di mini-Enduro in un bosco vicino casa, avevo 11, o 12 anni.

Fortunata ad avere il bosco, dove esattamente?
Tapa. È un piccolo villaggio, 100 km a sud di Tallin.

Da dove arriva questa passione per le moto? Tuo padre? Fratello maggiore?
Nessuno di loro. Nella mia famiglia non c'è alcuna tradizione nel motorsport. Siamo cinque figli e io sono la più grande. Ho semplicemente guardato i video su Youtube e mi è presa la passione per qualsiasi sport fuoristrada con le moto. Volevo andare in moto. Non sapevo che tipo di moto ma so che doveva avere due ruote.

Qualche eroe in particolare che hai seguito?
Ero pazza per Travis Pastrana, (motocross, campione americano di freestyle nda). Sì, è pazzesco. Ricordo che era il mio idolo, non avevo modelli dall'Estonia perché nessuno era coinvolto nelle cose che mi interessavano. Ovviamente avevamo alcuni grandi piloti di motocross, ma era troppo classico. Mi piaceva solo forse perché era fuori dagli schemi.

A quel tempo eri uno studente? Cosa hai studiato?
Avevo 15 anni e frequentavo la scuola secondaria e anche la scuola di musica. Stavo imparando a suonare la chitarra, poi mi sono diplomata in questo campo.

E come mai hai incontrato il Trial?
È stato il mio insegnante a farmi scoprire il Trial. Tante volte ho marinato la scuola per andare a girare con la mini moto da cross nel bosco e lui lo sapeva! Quindi, dato che stava promuovendo il Trial in Estonia, mi ha invitato a vedere un evento di due giorni, dove ho avuto la possibilità di guidare una Beta 125cc.

Come ti sei sentita in sella?
Era strano, tutto era diverso, prima la posizione. L'ho guidata per due giorni e poi lui è diventato il mio primo allenatore. Ha detto che avrebbe potuto prestarmi la moto per un paio di volte a settimana. Potremmo iniziare ad allenarci perché ha visto del potenziale in me. E poi la storia è iniziata...

E i tuoi genitori? Erano a favore di questo sport o no?
Beh, non hanno mai detto di no, ma non hanno nemmeno avuto le possibilità di comprarmi moto o cose del genere perché vengo da una famiglia numerosa: ho 2 sorelle e 2 fratelli, il più piccolo ha due anni.

Quindi hai dovuto trovare degli sponsor molto presto per far fronte al Trial?
Sì, con l'aiuto del mio insegnante e poi dell'importatore Beta ho preso una moto. Queste due persone hanno avuto un ruolo chiave nella mia carriera.

Quando hai iniziato nel mondo delle competizioni?
Ho fatto la mia prima gara europea nel 2012, a Zelhem, in Olanda. Sono andata lì solo per vedere cosa stavano facendo le altre ragazze. Mi sono iscritta alla classe top. Ma guardando le sezioni sono passata alla classe Internazionale. L'ho vinta ed è stato molto bello, un grande incentivo per me.

Quali moto hai guidato?
Dopo Beta, 2 Sherco, ho guidato 4 o 5 Gas Gas. Negli ultimi 3 anni ho la TRRS. Ho raggiunto un accordo con Jordi Tarres. La fabbrica mi sostiene.

Hai un altro lavoro o sei una pilota di Trial professionista?
No non faccio altro. Come sai, è difficile sbarcare il lunario con il Trial. Ma tutto ciò che faccio è connesso in qualche modo con la missione di promuovere il Trial perché lo vedo come uno sport molto interessante, con molte sfide e spunti di riflessione! Sono felice che il Trial mi abbia dato opportunità e competenze per essere nel mondo dello spettacolo.

Sì, ti ho visto saltare tra due grattacieli, dov'era? Perché questa folle idea?
Sì, era a Tallin. È successo che ogni volta che cercavo sponsor in Estonia per correre il campionato, mi veniva chiesto cosa fosse il Trial e chi ero io. Nessuno conosceva questo sport. Così io e i miei amici abbiamo deciso di inventare qualcosa per portare il Trial fuori dalla foresta. E ci è venuta questa folle idea. In realtà, per evitare la morte di questo sport, dobbiamo inventare tutti i modi per avvicinarlo alle persone. Al momento sembra più un'organizzazione top secret.

. Voi interpretate il ruolo delle Federazioni, complimenti! Eri spaventata da questo?
Certo, non ho dormito per un mese. La preparazione è durata sei mesi perché era senza alcun tipo di sicurezza per me. Era sicuro solo per gli spettatori. Ma dopo è stato molto bello. Almeno il mio nome in Estonia ora è noto a tutti i possessori di una moto.

Ho anche visto una tua foto mentre salti attraverso un cerchio di fuoco, com'è stato?
È stata una prima serata di un breve documentario su di me e le mie acrobazie allo Swisshotel. È stato organizzato al cinema e non volevamo fare solo una serata cinema, ma qualcosa in più.

Ci sono molti trial rider in Estonia? Com'è il mercato delle moto da fuoristrada?
Penso che abbiamo circa 80 o 90 corridori in totale. Il mercato è piccolo ma insegno Trial e ho studenti di altre discipline come Enduro e Motocross. Se impari ad andare in Trial, allora puoi andare facilmente col resto. È una sorta di Bibbia degli sport motoristici fuoristrada. In realtà la maggior parte dei piloti sono giovani in Estonia, quindi potremmo avere delle piccol star delle moto in futuro....

Del resto hai fatto la scelta da giovanissima di iniziare nel Trial invece che nel Motocross, cosa ti ha convinto? Sì, ricordo che stavo per comprare una moto da cross, una Yamaha 125. Stavo già supplicando i miei genitori, tipo, ti prego, to prego, ti prego, ...ma poi ho provato quella moto da trial e quell'uomo - poi diventato il mio allenatore - ha detto che ho dei numeri. Scelta difficile. Ero nel mio letto la notte e pensavo, quale sarebbe stata l'opzione migliore... Se avessi comprato quella moto da cross, forse sarei stata un po' troppo grande per iniziare, perché avevo già 15 anni. Invece nel Trial, primo qualcuno ha detto che sono portata, e poi sembra anche un po' strano...

Sei una ragazza e nessuno nella tua famiglia ti ha ispirato a fare del Trial, questo è quello che trovo strano!
È normale. La cosa divertente in Estonia è che arrivano molti giovani piloti di Trial. Abbiamo ragazzi e ragazze, indistintamente.

Ti alleni da sola o con qualcuno?
Quando sono in Estonia, mi alleno principalmente da sola, perché non ci sono molte persone che possano nadare, ad esempio mercoledì, alle 13:00. La maggior parte lavora. Quindi sono per lo più sola, ma spesso mi alleno in Finlandia, sono circa due ore di traghetto. Tommy Ahvala, con la sua Electric Motion, spesso va a girare lì. In inverno vado in Spagna per allenarmi.

Vedo il tuo furgone, è utilizzato anche come area camper, viaggi da sola?
Sì, dormo dentro. Viaggio con la mia ragazza, Kristel, mi aiuta a trovare sponsor e organizzare incontri. Manager, chef e creatore di contenuti (sorride).

Ricordo che l'anno scorso sei andata al Trial Park di Asiago per allenarti, com'è stato?
Sì, sono andata la settimana prima della prova del mondo in Italia, a Ponte di Legno. Era un'area molto bella, molto grande e abbastanza difficile perché era piovuto un po' in quei giorni e c'erano molti posti ancora "vergini" per le moto, mi è piaciuta un sacco!

Abbastanza difficile? Abbiamo fatto un paio di gare vintage lì. A proposito di vintage, ti ho visto guidare una Kawasaki KT 250 e il tuo commento è stato che l'hai trovata sexy, cosa intendi?
(...ridendo) Oh, volevo dire che è stata una bella esperienza, ma presto ho trovato molte differenze, Niente frizione, risposta dell'acceleratore un po' in ritardo... Comunque facendo un po' di pratica, mi sono divertita. Mi piacciono le trial vintage.

Stai gareggiando nel campionato mondiale ed europeo?
Solo nel mondiale quest'anno. Mi sto concentrando solo sulla TrialGP ed è già piuttosto costoso. Non è troppo facile coprire il budget.

A proposito del regolamento, ti piace il no-stop o no? E il parco chiuso?
(...facendo una smorfia) no, non mi piace. Voglio dire, se stai guidando vecchie moto e non hai dei freni buoni, potrebbe anche funzionare, ma con le nostre moto fermarsi davanti a un ostacolo è ancora più sicuro. In Estonia è consentito lo stop nelle competizioni. Per quanto riguarda il parco chiuso, il fatto che tu abbia solo 10 minuti per sistemare la tua moto è indifferente per i piloti ufficiali che hanno molti meccanici da aiutarli, per me è una difficoltà in più.

Hai altri hobby? Ti piacciono altri sport? Mi piacciono le escursioni in montagna, dopo questa gara andremo sulle Dolomiti, prima di tornare a casa. Vado in palestra, ma è per migliorare la mia guida. Per me è molto importante essere in buona forma fisica per guidare nel Trial. Se sei debole e senza resistenza, è difficile mantenere il ritmo concentrato per molto tempo.

Quali sono i tuoi piani per il futuro? Bambini? Trial per sempre?
(..sorridendo) Non ho molti progetti a lungo termine, di sicuro voglio il motorsport per tutta la mia vita. Se non correrò più probabilmente, insegnerò perché non insegno abbastanza adesso in Estonia, non so se parteciperò al campionato del mondo il prossimo anno. Dipende se troverò opportunità per riempire il mio budget per continuare.
