04/11/23 - Bou clinched his seventeenth indoor world title in Madrid

Toni Bou (Repsol Honda Trial Team) claimed his latest FIM X-Trial World crown in the style of all great Champions, with a superb victory. X-Trial Madrid provided one of the most exciting Finals of 2023 so far, as Bou duelled to the very last with his teammate Gabriel Marcelli, with only two marks separating them at the end of the night.

Bou had to dig deep and come back from five marks down after a rare error in Section Two, while Marcelli started the night with a hat-trick of cleans to take control. Then it was Bou’s turn to hit back, stringing together three cleans of his own and pulling level when Marcelli suffered his first fiasco in Section Four.

On this second visit to the Madrid Arena, after the event’s re-launch in the capital last year, the stage was set for a dramatic finish and the sport’s stars didn’t disappoint, providing a Final only decided in the last half metre of the final section. Bou was first through, only just home with a three-mark score. Marcelli, needing at least to match him to keep alive his hopes of a first career victory, dropped an early mark and then failed at the final hurdle.

Thus it was a near-perfect night for the Repsol Honda Trial Team, with this 1-2 finish and a first maximum of the season for Toni Bou, who also settled his 17th world title as his only remaining rival Jaime Busto failed to make the podium for the first time this season. It was Great Britain’s Toby Martyn who claimed Busto’s scalp for only his second trip to the rostrum, and one which completed an all-Montesa top trio in Madrid.

A disastrous first lap for Adam Raga (TRRS) with three failed sections meant that even though he tied with Toni Bou for top spot in Round Two he could only recover enough marks to claim fifth. Aniol Gelabert (Beta) sat five clear of Raga at the half way mark in qualifying, but with the veteran’s outstanding second run Gelabert was forced to settle for sixth. Meanwhile Benoit Bincaz (Sherco) beat Matteo Grattarola (Beta) and Sondre Haga (GasGas) in the final three places.

Toni Bou (1st): “It has been a fantastic night because along with Gabri we have made it a spectacular Final, and for me because of winning all three Rounds tonight and winning another X-Trial World Championship title in the best possible way. I am a very competitive person and I was really keen to make sure I won on the night, and even more so when it got tough because of my mistake in the second Section. That result and a superb performance from my teammate meant we were fighting right to the finish.”

Gabriel Marcelli (2nd): “I had the chance to win right to the final metre of the last Section, so it was a great Final. And it has been a perfect night for the team, with a 1-2 finish and Toni’s world title. For me, being consistently on the podium, with three second places now, shows the step forward I have made this season.”

Toby Martyn (3rd): “I am really happy and almost speechless. I have been very consistent throughout the night and my reward is a second X-Trial podium. Of course I have worked hard and we also made some changes on the bike that have worked well. A great night for me.”

The seventh and final stage of this 2023 season, X-Trial Vendée, rounds out the season in a week’s time on 11th November.

Bou diventa campione del mondo indoor per la 17-esima volta in Madrid

Toni Bou (Repsol Honda Trial Team) ha conquistato la sua ultima corona mondiale FIM X-Trial nello stile di tutti i grandi campioni, con una vittoria superba. L'X-Trial Madrid ha offerto una delle finali più emozionanti del 2023 finora, con Bou che ha duellato fino all'ultimo con il suo compagno di squadra Gabriel Marcelli: solo due punti li hanno separati alla fine della gara.

Bou ha dovuto faticare parecchio e rimontare da cinque punti sotto dopo un raro errore nella Zona Due, mentre Marcelli ha iniziato la serata con una tripletta di zeri per prendere il controllo. Poi è stato il turno di Bou a rispondere, mettendo insieme tre zeri e pareggiando il conto quando Marcelli ha subito il suo primo fiasco nella zona quattro.

In questa seconda visita all'Arena di Madrid, dopo il rilancio dell'evento nella capitale lo scorso anno, tutto era pronto per un finale ricco di suspance, Le stelle dello sport non hanno deluso, offrendo una finale decisa solo nell'ultimo mezzo metro dell'ultima zona. Bou ci è arrivato per primo e l'ha conclusa con un punteggio di tre punti. Marcelli, avendo bisogno almeno di eguagliarlo per mantenere vive le speranze di una prima vittoria in carriera, ha posato un piede all'inizio e poi ha fallito l'ultimo ostacolo.

È stata quindi una serata quasi perfetta per il Repsol Honda Trial Team, con questo 1-2 finale e il primo massimo della stagione per Toni Bou, che ha anche conquistato il suo 17° titolo mondiale poiché il suo unico rivale rimasto Jaime Busto non è riuscito a raggiungere il podio per la prima volta in questa stagione. È stato il britannico Toby Martyn (Montesa) a sbalzare fuori dal podio Busto, completando un top trio tutto Montesa a Madrid.

Un primo giro disastroso per Adam Raga (TRRS) con tre sezioni fallite ha fatto sì che, nonostante fosse poi giunto a pari merito con Toni Bou per il primo posto nel secondo round, riuscisse a recuperare solo punti sufficienti per conquistare il quinto posto. Aniol Gelabert (Beta) si trovava a cinque punti di vantaggio da Raga a metà percorso delle qualifiche, ma con l'eccezionale seconda manche del veterano, Gelabert si è dovuto accontentare del sesto posto. Nel frattempo Benoit Bincaz (Sherco) ha battuto Matteo Grattarola (Beta) e Sondre Haga (GasGas) negli ultimi tre posti.

Toni Bou (1°): “È stata una serata fantastica perché insieme a Gabri abbiamo realizzato una finale spettacolare, e poi per me, perché stasera ho vinto tutti e tre i round e ho vinto un altro titolo di Campionato del mondo X-Trial nel miglior modo possibile. Sono una persona molto competitiva e volevo davvero assicurarmi di vincere questa notte, e ancora di più quando le cose si sono fatte difficili a causa del mio errore nella seconda sezione. Quel risultato e la prestazione eccezionale del mio compagno di squadra significavano che avremmo lottato fino al traguardo."

Gabriel Marcelli (2°): “Ho avuto la possibilità di vincere fino all'ultimo metro dell'ultima sezione, quindi è stata una grande finale. Ed è stata una serata perfetta per la squadra, con un 1-2 finale e il titolo mondiale di Toni. Per me, essere costantemente sul podio, con tre secondi posti adesso, dimostra il passo avanti che ho fatto in questa stagione”.

Toby Martyn (3°): “Sono davvero felice e quasi senza parole. Sono stato molto costante per tutta la notte e la mia ricompensa è un secondo podio nell'X-Trial. Ovviamente ho lavorato duro e abbiamo anche apportato alcune modifiche alla moto che hanno funzionato bene. Una serata fantastica per me."

La settima e ultima tappa sarà a Vendée, e concluderà la stagione tra una settimana, l’11 novembre.
