11/05/24 - Jack Price clinched the Scottish Six Days

Jack Price (Sherco) is the hero of the Six Days of Scotland 2024, the one in which Thursday - the fourth day - will be remembered for its terrible weather conditions: heavy rain that fell in the morning influenced the unlucky riders who had to start first that day.

They found swollen streams, with sections made impossible for many. The 14-time winner of this race, Dougie Lampkin (Vertigo), paid the price: until then he was in full swing for the final victory, but he ran into a "5" and four "3s" for a total by 25 points, rolling into ninth place. The good performances on the fifth and sixth days then allowed him to climb up to the seventh final position.

It was therefore a six day of young people, now capable of imposing themselves even in these classics where experience and concentration have always been more important than individual skills in the section. But the sections themselves are becoming more challenging every year to the detriment of less skilled pilots, those who continue to populate the oldest and most famous competition that the Trial world can boast.

Behind Price another Jack, one of the Peace brothers still on Sherco, with just 3 more penalties: 18 to 21 on a total of almost 180 sections in the 6 days. Brother Dan, after running third until the final day, dropped 6 marks on Saturday and slipped to fifth.

The podium was conquered by the young Harry Hemingway (Beta) with just one point more, at 22, while with 25 total penalties was Toby Martyn (Montesa) who on Saturday before the start of the race was in Geneva to compete in the final of the X-Trial. Martyn was also the best on the unfortunate day of Thursday where he managed to commit only 6 errors.

First of the non-English riders is the Spaniard Arnau Farre (Sherco) in twelfth place.

The participation of those who have won it in the past and are not ashamed now to settle for secondary positions, albeit very respectable, is valuable, i.e. James Dabill who finished in 11th position or Amos Bilbao in 31st.

But there are also super fans like Spaniard Carlos Casas who has exceeded 30 appearances or Swiss Dominique Guillame who is very close, speaking of riders who are foreign to the United Kingdom.

Among the women, a sort of revenge for Emma Bristow (Sherco) - 43rd - on her all-time rival Laia Sanz (Gas Gas) - 46th, who had beaten her in 2021 when she decided to return to racing in the Trial world championship. "Never mind the world championship, but here the music is different" - the blonde Englishwoman seems to want to reiterate, having managed to prevail over the multiple Spanish champion, who also distinguished herself in the Motorcycle Rally with her participation in the Dakar.

Only one Italian in the race, Massimo Perassolo, who finished in 205th place. Moreover, the Italian federation does not promote participation in this classic much, given that the Italian Championship includes two Format B races today and tomorrow in central Italy.

A real shame, because it would be a great experience for our young people which would enrich them above all from a mental point of view, accustoming them to choosing the best trajectories on their own, without being able to think about it too much.

Who knows whether the extensive media coverage received this year with a connected radio - Nevis Radio - on air and the numerous videos and photos that journalists but also simple spectators have shared online, as well as Michelin's interest as a sponsor, has tickled the curiosities of the latest generations to try the adventure soon.

Jack Price svetta alla Sei Giorni

E' Jack Price (Sherco) l'eroe della Sei Giorni di Scozia 2024, quella in cui la giornata di giovedì – ossia il quarto giorno – verrà ricordata per le sue terribili condizioni meteo: una pioggia fitta caduta nella mattinata ha condizionato i piloti sfortunati che hanno dovuto partire per primi in quel giorno.

Hanno trovato torrenti in piena, con zone rese per molti impossibili. Proprio il 14 volte vincitore di questa gara, Dougie Lampkin (Vertigo), ne ha fatto le spese: fino ad allora era in piena corsa per la vittoria finale, ma è incappato in un “5” e in quattro “3” per un totale di 25 punti, rotolando al nono posto. Le buone prestazioni nel quinto e sesto giorno gli hanno poi permesso di risalire fino alla settima posizione finale.

E' stata dunque una sei giorni dei giovani, ora capaci di imporsi anche in queste classiche dove esperienza e concentrazione erano da sempre più importanti delle singole abilità in zona. Ma proprio le sezioni stanno diventando ogni anno più impegnative a scapito dei piloti meno skillati, quelli che continuano a popolare la più antica e famosa competizione che il mondo del Trial possa vantare.

Dietro Price un altro Jack, uno dei fratelli Peace ancora su Sherco, con appena 3 penalità in più:18 a 21 su un totale di quasi 180 sezioni nei 6 giorni. Il fratello Dan, dopo essere stato terzo fino all'ultimo giorno, ha lasciato 6 piedi sabato ed è scivolato al quinto posto.

Podio conquistato invece dal giovane Harry Hemingway (Beta) con giusto un punto in più, a quota 22, mentre con 25 penalità totali figura Toby Martyn (Montesa) che il sabato antecedente la partenza della gara era a Ginevra a disputare la finale dell'X-Trial. Martyn è stato anche il migliore nella giornata infausta di giovedì dove è riuscito a commettere solo 6 errori.

Primo dei piloti non inglesi lo spagnolo Arnau Farre (Sherco) al dodicesimo posto.

Interessante la partecipazione di chi l'ha vinta in passato e non si vergogna ora di accontentarsi di posizioni di rincalzo, seppur di tutto rispetto, vedi James Dabill che ha finito in 11-esima posizione o di Amos Bilbao in 31-esima.

Ma ci sono anche i super affezionati come lo spagnolo Carlos Casas che ha superato le 30 presenze o lo svizzero Dominique Guillame molto vicino, parlando di piloti stranieri al Regno Unito.

Fra le donne una sorta di rivincita per Emma Bristow (Sherco) - 43-esima - sulla rivale di sempre Laia Sanz (Gas Gas) - 46-esima, che l'aveva battuta nel 2021 quando decise di tornare a correre il mondiale Trial. "Pazienza il mondiale, ma qui la musica è diversa" - sembra voler ribadire la bionda inglese, riuscita a spuntala sulla pluri campionessa spagnola, distintasi anche nel Moto Rally con le sue partecipazioni alla Dakar.

Un solo italiano in gara, Massimo Perassolo, che l'ha conclusa al 205-esimo posto. Del resto la FMI non promuove molto la partecipazione a questa classica, visto che nel Campionato Italiano figurano due gare Format B proprio oggi e domani nel centro Italia.

Un vero peccato, perchè sarebbe una bella esperienza per i nostri giovani che li arricchirebbe soprattutto dal punto di vista mentale, abituandoli a scegliere da soli le migliori traiettorie, senza poterci pensare troppo.

Chissà che l'ampia copertura mediatica ricevuta quest'anno con una radio collegata – la Nevis Radio - in diretta e i numerosi video e foto che giornalisti ma anche semplici spettatori hanno condiviso in rete, oltrechè l'interessamento Michelin come sponsor, non abbia solleticato la curiosità delle ultime generazioni da tentarne l'avventura prossimamente.
