20/05/24 - CONFIRM FOR BOU AND BRISTOW, J.PEACE IN TRIAL2

Toni Bou (Montesa) and Emma Bristow (Sherco) maintained their perfect starts to the 2024 Hertz FIM Trial World Championship on day two of the Taisei Rotec TrialGP of Japan with winning performances in the premier TrialGP and TrialGP Women classes to back up their victories yesterday while Jack Peace (Sherco) finished today on top in Trial2.

With the severity of a number of sections at the Mobility Resort Motegi slightly increased following Saturday’s opening day of action, record-breaking Bou – who is attempting to win his eighteenth straight TrialGP crown this season – put on a masterclass in front of a huge crowd of twelve-thousand spectators.

While rain threatened, the day remained warm and dry resulting in similar conditions to yesterday with grip still a rare commodity on the near-vertical climbs and descents and over the huge imported boulders that featured in the majority of sections, but the Spanish star took everything in his stride.

A maximum on section six when he was adjudged to have rolled backwards with his foot down was the only major blot on his opening lap of ten that gave him a four-mark advantage ahead of a revitalised Adam Raga (Sherco) with Gabriel Marcelli (Montesa), who was second yesterday, completing the all-Spanish top three at the halfway point on fifteen.

Trial fans are used to seeing Bou soak up the pressure in close events before turning up the heat on his opposition and he did not disappoint with his second-lap total of nine putting victory out of his rivals’ reach.

“I’m super-happy with the weekend,” said Bou. “Two wins is the best way to start the championship. I made a few mistakes today, but I rode well and a big thank you to the team for making this possible.”

At forty-two years of age, two-time champion Raga is the veteran of the class, but his change of teams and machinery over the off-season has clearly motivated the veteran and by adding just eleven more to his score on lap two he secured a comfortable second place – his best finish since 2022 – as twenty-four-year-old Marcelli collected an additional sixteen.

Marcelli’s hopes of catching Raga were effectively ended on section ten where he was desperately unlucky to collect a maximum on lap two when he punctured, although this late drama never threatened to drop him off the podium and he was still seven clear of his compatriot Aniol Gelabert (TRRS) at the end of the day.

The top five was completed by French rider Benoit Bincaz (Sherco) who finished one position higher than yesterday on a total of forty-three after reeling in Italy’s Matteo Grattarola (Beta) in the tense closing stages.

There was more misery for Jaime Busto (GASGAS), the TrialGP vice-champion for the last two seasons. Technical problems restricted the Spaniard to ninth yesterday and he struggled again today, slumping to a below-par seventh that is a major blow to his hopes of dethroning Bou at the end of the season.

Bristow is aiming to close her career in the top-flight with a tenth TrialGP Women title in eleven years and the thirty-three-year-old British star, who plans to retire at the end of the season, claimed her second win of the weekend – although it was a close-run thing.

Spain’s Berta Abellan (Scorpa) put in a sensational opening lap of just two to lead the defending champion by eleven before suffering technical problems at the halfway stage of the second lap. As Bristow picked up the pace, adding just five to her total, Abellan piled up the marks in the final seven sections of the Trial and she slipped to third on a total of thirty-seven, ten behind Andrea Sofia Rabino (Beta) from Italy.

“I rode a lot better on the last lap and didn’t have any silly fives,” said Bristow. “I think that was my fiftieth GP win so I’m really proud. I’m very happy, but the hard work continues.”

Completing an identical top five to yesterday, Naomi Monnier (Montesa) and Alice Minta (Scorpa) ended the day in fourth and fifth, although this time around the French rider’s score of forty-three put her just two ahead of the twenty-year-old British talent.

Trial2 is always a close-fought class with multiple title contenders and today it was British rider Peace who staked an early claim to the crown with a narrow three-mark win ahead of Alex Canales (Sherco) from Spain with France’s Gael Chatagno (Electric Motion) a further one mark behind in third.

Peace broke free from the chasing pack on the first lap with his total of three putting him five ahead of yesterday’s winner Sondre Haga (GASGAS) and eight clear of Canales. It proved to be a decisive advantage and despite three maximums on lap two Peace was able to defend his lead from Canales and Chatagno as Haga dropped out of contention and back to fifth behind Britain’s Jack Dance (GASGAS) who failed to finish yesterday.

“I had a really good second lap yesterday and I carried that form into today,” said Peace. “I was nice and relaxed and had a brilliant first lap. I made a few mistakes on the second, but it was still good enough to get the win so I’m really happy.”

The result sees Peace lead the championship on thirty-three points, just one ahead of a two-way tie for second between Chatagno and Canales with Haga another point behind in fourth.

The focus now shifts to Sant Julià de Lo`ria, high in the Pyrenees, for the TrialGP of Andorra – round two of the 2024 Hertz FIM Trial World Championship – on 7-9 June where the competitors in TrialGP and Trial2 will be joined by the rising stars of the Trial3 class.

Toni Bou (Montesa) ed Emma Bristow (Sherco) hanno mantenuto la loro partenza perfetta per il Campionato mondiale Hertz FIM Trial 2024 nel secondo giorno del Taisei Rotec TrialGP del Giappone con prestazioni vincenti nelle classi TrialGP e TrialGP Women, confermandp le loro vittorie di ieri mentre Jack Peace (Sherco) ha concluso oggi al primo posto nella Prova2.

Con la gravità di alcune sezioni del Mobility Resort Motegi leggermente aumentata dopo la giornata di apertura di sabato, il recordman Bou - che sta tentando di vincere il suo diciottesimo titolo TrialGP consecutivo in questa stagione - ha dato una lezione a tutti, davanti a una folla enorme di dodicimila spettatori.

Nonostante la minaccia di pioggia, la giornata è rimasta calda e asciutta, con condizioni simili a quelle di ieri, ma con l'aderenza ancora scarsa sulle salite e discese quasi verticali e sugli enormi massi importati, che caratterizzavano la maggior parte delle zone.

Un cinque nella sesta sezione, datogli per un arretramento con il piede a terra, è stata l'unica macchia nel suo primo giro di dieci punti che gli ha dato un vantaggio di quattro davanti a un rivitalizzato Adam Raga (Sherco). Gabriel Marcelli (Montesa ), che ieri era secondo, ha completato la top tre tutta spagnola a metà percorso, con quindici.

Bou ci ha abituato ad assorbire la pressione nei momenti importanti e ribaltarla sui suoi avversari: non ha deluso, con il suo totale di nove al secondo gir, oha messo la vittoria fuori dalla portata dei suoi rivali.

"Sono super soddisfatto del fine settimana", ha detto Bou. "Due vittorie sono il modo migliore per iniziare il campionato. Ho fatto qualche errore oggi, ma ho guidato bene e un grande ringraziamento alla squadra per aver reso tutto questo possibile."

A quarantadue anni, il due volte campione del mondo Raga è il veterano della classe, ma il suo cambio di squadra e di moto durante la bassa stagione lo ha chiaramente motivato e aggiungendo solo altri undici al suo punteggio al secondo giro, si è assicurato una comoda piazza d'onore – il suo miglior piazzamento dal 2022 – mentre il ventiquattrenne Marcelli ne ha collezionati altri sedici.

Le speranze di Marcelli di raggiungere Raga si sono effettivamente esaurite nella decima sezione dove è stato disperatamente sfortunato a raccogliere un cinque al secondo giro quando ha forato, anche se questo dramma finale non ha mai minacciato di farlo scendere dal podio ed era ancora a sette punti di vantaggio dal suo connazionale Aniol Gelabert. (TRRS) a fine giornata.

La top five è stata completata dal francese Benoit Bincaz (Sherco) che ha concluso una posizione più in alto rispetto a ieri su un totale di quarantatré dopo aver superato il nostro Matteo Grattarola (Beta) nelle tese fasi finali.

Ancora giornata negativa per Jaime Busto (GASGAS), vice-campione TrialGP nelle ultime due stagioni. Problemi tecnici hanno limitato lo spagnolo al nono posto ieri, mentre oggi ha faticato ancora, crollando ad un settimo posto, sotto la media, un duro colpo per le sue speranze di detronizzare Bou a fine stagione.

Bristow punta a chiudere la sua carriera nella massima serie con il decimo titolo TrialGP femminile in undici anni e la trentatreenne stella britannica, che ha intenzione di ritirarsi a fine stagione, ha ottenuto la sua seconda vittoria nel fine settimana, anche se la battaglia è stata molto ravvicinata.

La spagnola Berta Abellan (Scorpa) ha realizzato un sensazionale giro di apertura con soli due eroori, precedendo di undici la campionessa in carica prima di soffrire di problemi tecnici a metà del secondo giro. Mentre Bristow aumentava il ritmo, aggiungendone solo cinque al totale, Abellan accumulava punti nelle ultime sette sezioni della prova ed scivolava al terzo posto su un totale di trentasette, dieci dietro Andrea Sofia Rabino (Beta). .

"Ho guidato molto meglio nell'ultimo giro e non ho avuto alcun cinque stupido", ha detto Bristow. "Penso che fosse il mio cinquantesimo round. Ho vinto il GP, quindi sono davvero orgogliosa. Sono molto felice, ma il duro lavoro continua."

Completando una top five identica a quella di ieri, Naomi Monnier (Montesa) e Alice Minta (Scorpa) hanno concluso la giornata al quarto e quinto posto, anche se questa volta il punteggio di quarantatre punti della francese la pone a soli due punti di vantaggio sulla ventenne - talento britannico.

La Trial2 è sempre una classe molto combattuta con numerosi contendenti al titolo e oggi è stato il pilota britannico Peace a rivendicare in anticipo la corona con una vittoria di misura di tre punti davanti allo spagnolo Alex Canales (Sherco), con il francese Gael Chatagno (Electric Motion), un ulteriore punto indietro, terzo.

Peace si è liberato dal gruppo degli inseguitori al primo giro con un totale di tre che lo hanno portato cinque punti davanti al vincitore di ieri Sondre Haga (GASGAS) e otto davanti a Canales. Si è rivelato un vantaggio decisivo e, nonostante tre cinque al secondo giro, Peace è riuscito a difendere il suo vantaggio da Canales e Chatagno mentre Haga è uscito dalla competizione ed è tornato al quinto posto dietro al britannico Jack Dance (GASGAS) che ieri non era riuscito a finire.

"Ho fatto un ottimo secondo giro ieri e sono riuscito a mantenere questa forma anche oggi", ha detto Peace. "Ero tranquillo e rilassato e ho avuto un primo giro brillante. Ho fatto qualche errore nel secondo, ma è stato comunque sufficiente per ottenere la vittoria, quindi sono davvero felice."

Il risultato vede Peace guidare il campionato con trentatré punti, solo uno in più rispetto al doppio pareggio per il secondo posto tra Chatagno e Canales con Haga un altro punto dietro al quarto posto.

L'attenzione si sposta ora a Sant Julià de Lòria, in alto sui Pirenei, per il TrialGP di Andorra – secondo round del Campionato Mondiale Hertz FIM Trial 2024 – dal 7 al 9 giugno, dove ai concorrenti di TrialGP e Trial2 si uniranno le crescenti stelle della classe Trial3.
